Union County Jail Roster

The Union County Jail roster in New Jersey is a public tool that allows citizens to find out who is currently in custody at the county correctional facility. Public information about current and recently released inmates can be found on the UnionCourt.us website. Additionally, data is available through the official website of the Union County Sheriff's Office, by phone, or during a personal visit to the facility. The roster is maintained by the Union County Jail, a division under the Sheriff's Office. Data is periodically updated to reflect the current composition of detainees. This resource ensures transparency in the criminal justice system and allows for checking the detention status of a specific individual.

Search Current Inmates in Union Jail

There are several ways to find information about an inmate in the Union County correctional facility.

Online Search

  1. Go to UnionCourt.us — enter the last name or booking number to view public records.
  2. Use the New Jersey Department of Corrections' search system if the person has already been transferred to a state-level facility.
  3. For court cases related to the arrest, use the Find a Case portal on the NJ Courts website.

You will need the detainee's full legal name (last name and first name in Latin script) for the search. The booking number will expedite the result, but it is not mandatory.

By Phone

Call the facility directly and ask to confirm whether a specific person is in custody. Be prepared to provide the full name and date of birth of the person you are looking for.

In Person

Visit the lobby of the Union County correctional facility during business hours. Information is provided through the public service window.

Find Union Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially processed at the correctional facility. The procedure includes recording personal data, photographing, fingerprinting, and registering charges.

Each record contains:

  • A unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • List of charges presented
  • Name of the agency that made the arrest
  • Basic identification data of the detainee

Online access to these records is available through the sheriff's website or via UnionCourt.us. If the case is already closed or the record is not displayed in the electronic registry, an official request for copies of court documents can be submitted through the Superior Court Clerk's Office. For cases heard in the county's municipal courts, try the municipal court case search.

If the person has been transferred to a state-level facility, their data will appear in the Department of Corrections offender search system.

Search the Union Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Optionally, add the first name to narrow down the results. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one incorrect letter will exclude the desired record from the results.
  • If the last name is complex or has multiple spelling variants, try entering just the first few letters.
  • Hyphens and apostrophes are sometimes processed differently — if no results are found, try the version without special characters.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it directly. This is the most accurate method — it will immediately bring up a single record.

If the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure that the person is indeed held at the county level, not the state level.
  2. The detainee may have already been released — the roster only shows individuals who are in custody at the time of the inquiry.
  3. There may be a few hours between the arrest and the appearance of the record in the roster — try again later.
  4. Call the facility at (908) 527-4450 for clarification.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Union

The Union County Jail roster is updated periodically throughout the day but not in real-time. There is usually a delay of several hours to one business day between the actual intake of a detainee and the appearance of their record in the online system.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Publication delay. New records do not appear instantly — the processing and data entry procedure takes time.
  • Disappearance of records after release. When a person is released, their record is removed from the active roster. This is not an archive of all past bookings.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes the last name or other data is entered incorrectly, complicating the search.
  • Transfers. If a detainee is transferred to a state-level facility, their record will disappear from the county roster.

To obtain archival records or documents on closed cases, submit a written request to the Union County Court or use the public records request procedure under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act. Information on submitting such requests can be found on the government records request page.
